What is Purple Star astrology?
The Chinese zodiac tells you your animal from your birth year. Purple Star astrology goes much further: from your birth date, hour and sex it draws a chart of twelve areas of life and places named stars in each. This is the system behind our readings. Here is how it works, in plain English.

Where it comes from
Purple Star astrology is known in Chinese as Zi Wei Dou Shu and in Vietnamese as tử vi. It is traditionally dated to the Song dynasty, about a thousand years ago, and credited to the Taoist scholar Chen Tuan, though like most old systems it grew over centuries. It takes its name from Zi Wei, the Purple Star, which represents the Emperor and is the most important of its fourteen major stars.
Today it is one of the most widely used forms of Chinese astrology, especially in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam, where many families have a chart cast for a new baby. It sits alongside Bazi, the Four Pillars, as one of the two main systems for reading a birth moment.
What the chart is made of
A Purple Star chart is a square of twelve boxes around a centre. Each box is a palace, which we call a life area: Life, Love & Marriage, Money, Career, Wellbeing and so on. The stars are the characters that live in those boxes. Which star lands in which area is set by fixed rules from your birth details, so two people born at the same hour on the same day get the same chart, and no one is guessing.
Casting a chart runs in a fixed order:
- Convert the birth date to the Chinese lunar calendar. The day and month of the lunar date drive most of the chart.
- Find the Life area. The lunar month and the birth hour decide which of the twelve boxes is your Life area, the heart of the chart. The Body area, which you grow into after your mid-thirties, is placed the same way.
- Set the chart element. The Life area and the birth year give the chart one of five elements (Water, Wood, Metal, Earth or Fire) with a number from two to six. This decides how old you are when each ten-year decade begins.
- Place the Emperor. The chart element and the lunar day fix where the Purple Star sits. The other thirteen major stars follow from it in a set pattern.
- Add the minor stars. Supporting stars, such as the two mentors, the scholar and artist, and the horse of travel, are placed from the birth year, month, day and hour.
- Apply the four transformations. The birth year marks four stars with Prosperity, Power, Recognition or Lesson, which colour whichever area each of those stars sits in.
- Read brightness. Every major star sits more or less comfortably in each box. We show this on a scale from Very strong to Challenged.
Our charts are calculated by software that follows these standard rules, and we have checked its star positions against established charting tools. The method page has more on that.
The twelve life areas
In traditional terms these are the twelve palaces. We use plain names so a chart reads without a glossary.
- Life (Ming Gong)
- Who you are at your core: personality, strengths and life direction.
- Siblings & Peers (Xiong Di)
- Brothers, sisters, close peers and business partners.
- Love & Marriage (Fu Qi)
- Your partner, how you love, and what you need in a relationship.
- Children & Creativity (Zi Nu)
- Children, students, and the things you create.
- Money (Cai Bo)
- How you earn, spend and hold on to money.
- Wellbeing (Ji E)
- Energy, stress and the habits that keep you balanced.
- Travel & Outside World (Qian Yi)
- How you do away from home: travel, moving and public life.
- Friends & Network (Jiao You)
- Friends, colleagues, staff and the people you can count on.
- Career (Guan Lu)
- Work style, ambition and the kind of career that suits you.
- Home & Property (Tian Zhai)
- Your home, property and family environment.
- Happiness & Blessings (Fu De)
- Inner contentment, hobbies, and blessings from your family line.
- Parents & Mentors (Fu Mu)
- Parents, mentors, bosses and how you relate to authority.
An area with no major star of its own is not empty: it borrows the major stars from the area directly opposite it on the square, and is read as more flexible.
The fourteen major stars
The major stars carry the main themes of a chart. Each has a traditional name and a character; we give them plain English names that say what they are about. Where a star sits, and how brightly, shapes that area of life.
- The Emperor (Zi Wei)
- Leadership, dignity and self-respect. Likes to be in charge.
- The Strategist (Tian Ji)
- A quick, planning mind. Adaptable, curious, sometimes restless.
- The Sun (Tai Yang)
- Generous and visible. Gives energy to others and shines in public.
- The Treasurer (Wu Qu)
- Decisive and money-minded. Strong discipline and follow-through.
- The Contented One (Tian Tong)
- Easygoing and warm. Enjoys life and brings people together.
- The Judge (Lian Zhen)
- Principled and intense. Strong ambition with strong values.
- The Treasury (Tian Fu)
- Stable and resourceful. Good at managing and keeping what is built.
- The Moon (Tai Yin)
- Sensitive and caring. Draws strength from home and quiet saving.
- The Wolf (Tan Lang)
- Charming and hungry for life. Many talents and a big social appetite.
- The Speaker (Ju Men)
- Sharp, questioning and persuasive. Words are the main tool.
- The Minister (Tian Xiang)
- Fair, helpful and diplomatic. Keeps the peace and serves well.
- The Sage (Tian Liang)
- Wise and protective. Often the one others turn to for help.
- The Marshal (Qi Sha)
- Brave and independent. Makes bold moves and leads from the front.
- The Pioneer (Po Jun)
- Breaks old patterns to start fresh. Thrives on change.
Beyond these are dozens of minor stars that add detail: helpers and mentors, study and art, travel, drive, patience and surprise. A reading mentions the ones that matter for the question at hand.
The four transformations
Every birth year marks four stars with a transformation. They are the chart's way of saying where ease, drive, recognition and lessons sit for you. Each year and each decade add their own set on top, which is how a yearly forecast is read.
- Prosperity (Hua Lu): Brings opportunity, ease and gain to this area.
- Power (Hua Quan): Adds control, authority and drive to this area.
- Recognition (Hua Ke): Brings reputation, respect and helpful people.
- Lesson (Hua Ji): An area that needs extra care and teaches you most.
Decades and years
The chart is not static. Every ten years a different area takes over as the temporary Life area, which is why people often feel their priorities shift at the turn of a decade. Each year does the same on a smaller scale: one natal area acts as the year's Life area and the four yearly transformations land on particular stars. A 2027 forecast is simply the natal chart read through that year's overlay.
How a reading uses all this
A good reading starts with the Life area, because its stars describe who you are at your core, then turns to the area you are asking about: Love & Marriage for relationships, Money for money, Career for work. It checks the strength of each star, any transformation touching it, and whether the area is borrowing stars from opposite. Then it says what that tends to mean in practice and what to do with it. That is the order our readings follow, section by section.
Purple Star, the Chinese zodiac and Western astrology
| System | Uses | Gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese zodiac | Birth year | One of twelve animals with an element. Quick, shared with everyone born that year. |
| Purple Star | Birth year, month, day, hour and sex | Twelve life areas with named stars in each, plus decades and years. Personal to the hour. |
| Western astrology | Birth date, time and place | Planets in signs and houses from the sky at birth. A different tradition with some parallels: twelve houses, a rising sign. |
What it can and can't tell you
Purple Star is good at describing patterns: how you tend to handle money, what you need from a partner, the kind of work that suits you, where a year asks for patience. It is not a crystal ball. We treat it as cultural reference and entertainment, we never predict illness, accidents or disasters, and nothing in a reading is medical, legal or financial advice. Read a chart the way you would read a thoughtful friend's description of you: take what is useful.
Questions
- Is Purple Star the same as the Chinese zodiac?
- No. The Chinese zodiac uses only your birth year and gives one of twelve animals. Purple Star uses the year, month, day and hour, and gives you a chart of twelve areas with stars in each. Your animal sign appears in the chart, but it is a small part of it.
- Is it the same as Bazi, the Four Pillars?
- They are sibling systems from the same tradition and use the same birth details, but they work differently. Bazi reads the balance of the five elements in your birth moment. Purple Star places named stars into twelve life areas. Practitioners often use both; we use Purple Star because its areas map so directly onto everyday questions.
- I was born outside Asia. Does it still work?
- Yes. The chart is cast from the moment of birth, wherever it happened. We convert your calendar date to the Chinese lunar calendar automatically. What matters is an accurate date and, ideally, the hour.
- What if I don't know my birth time?
- The hour sets where your Life area sits, so it matters. If you don't know it, we cast the chart for midday, the traditional default, and say so in the reading. Most areas stay the same; one or two may sit a position off. A birth certificate or a parent's memory is worth checking.
- Why is it called Purple Star?
- The most important star in the system is Zi Wei, the "Purple Star", which stands for the Emperor and gives the system its name. The full name, Zi Wei Dou Shu, means roughly "Purple Star and Dipper calculation".
- Can it predict the future?
- Not in the way a fortune teller would claim. A chart describes tendencies: where you are strong, where you need care, and which areas a given year puts in focus. What you do with that is up to you. We never predict illness, accidents or specific events, and nothing we write is medical, legal or financial advice.
